What are ‘World Coffee Championships?

World Coffee Championships (WCC) are organized every year by World Coffee Events for the title of: World Barista Championship, World Brewers Cup, World Cup Tasters Championship, Cezve/Ibrik Championship, World Latte Art Championship, World Coffee in Good Spirits Championship, World Coffee Roasting Championship.

World Coffee Events (WCE) is the premier producer of events and competitions organized to engage the coffee community from all over the world and to promote coffee excellence and the role of the barista.

The World Barista Championship

One of the most compelling races is the World Barista Championship (WBC) that allows professional baristas to demonstrate their high-level skills and coffee expertise through different performances in order to become the world barista champion.

During this competition, the best baristas of the world, the winners of WCE sanctioned competition events, challenge themselves in different preparations. In 15 minutes of performance, each participant has to prepare 12 drinks for four sensory judges, with the presence of one technical judge and one head judge:

  • 4 espressos

  • 4 milk drinks

  • 4 original signature drinks to exacting standards

The first World Barista Championship (WBC) took place in Monte Carlo in the year 2000 and from then on the competition has evolved, grown and become more complex with a very detailed regulation.

In the years some changes have been made to the rules, according to new trends: as an example in 2016 the traditional cappuccino preparation has been replaced by a “latte based preparation”, a general milk drink.

The World Barista Championship is known for being the launching pad of innovation in the specialty coffee industry, so it’s very important to follow the regulation upgrades to better understand and anticipate new trends in the world of coffee.
